Although the fire was put out early in the morning, National Grid and Chief Sutherland were on scene Monday night working on the apartment complex.
The fire broke out at the Willows of Chaminade apartment complex in Marcy at about 12:10 this morning. Chief Sutherland says there was fire coming out of the west side of the building and heavy smoke. He says the Stittville, Maynard, Oriskany, and Floyd fire departments were on scene to put out the fire.
Chad Jennings just moved to the complex and being new, was definitely a little unsettled by the fire. "It was a little bit scary," he says, "I know there was a lot of damage inside some of the homes; I know they had people coming in to clean out the water and stuff."
Chief Sutherland says the one apartment where the fire started is destroyed. He says there was water damage to two other apartments and smoke damage throughout the whole structure. As of tonight, there was still a lot of glass on the ground and people were airing out their homes. The power had been turned back on Monday night so some people were able to move back in. Chief Sutherland believes about 6 people were still being assisted by the Red Cross. The Oneida County Sherriff's Department is still investigating the cause of the fire.
