The well known poet, Maya Angelou spoke at the school's new event center.
It was a full house at MVCC's Jorgensen Athletic Event Center.
Dr. Angelou spoke on behalf of the school's cultural series.
People in the crowd say they've been anxiously awaiting the event.
"I've been waiting for this event since I found out she was coming. Maya is one of the greatest poets in the world," says Tenolian Bell.
"It's really a great coming together event for this community as well as people across Upstate New York and beyond who are interested in what Dr. Angelou has to say," said Director of Marketing and Communications at MVCC, Matthew Snyder.
Snyder says they had calls all the way from Buffalo and New York City with people looking to get tickets to see Dr. Angelou.
Bell says he purchased tickets to see Angelou as soon as he found out she was coming to the area.
He has been in Utica for six years and says this is the first time MVCC has had an African American of her stature here.
Snyder also says this is the first big public event in the new Jorgensen Athletic Center.
The arena has over 2,000 people tonight.
