It's been the talk in the Village of Yorkville for awhile, the possibility of abolishing The Police Department.

Yorkville residents tell Eyewitness News that they are more comfortable with their own police department and say that safety is their main concern.

However, Yorkville Mayor, Anthony Leone says the public's safety will never be at risk.

Some residents say they do not want the police department abolished

One Yorkville resident says she feels she wouldn't see the police officers as frequently and is happy with the relationship she has with all the officers.

"We want to keep our village as safe as possible. I think that the officers do a fantastic job," said Yorkville Resident, Tina Collea.

"The Sheriff's Department, I don't think, will be able to have a dedicated police officer and car in Yorkville 24/7 like they do now," said another Yorkville Resident, Susan Vincent.

"The Sheriff's Police Department is a highly professional organization, and they will get to know the village relatively quickly. Any new deputies will get to know the residents. It doesn't take that long," said Mayor Leone.

The may also said he understands that people are worried of the Police Department is taken away, the village will lose it's "personal touch."

Residents were able to address these types of issues Tuesday night to get different questions answered.

Voting on the Yorkville Police Department will take place next Tuesday, December 13th in the village office.
