Through it all, a common theme during Sandy is downed trees.

Eyewitness News spoke with a tree specialist in North Utica to get some important safety tips.

Jim McGuire says people should call a professional if a tree is broken off or laying on a shed or fence.

He says it's not worth trying to move it by yourself.

"You have to know the pressure points, how the branches were bent, and what to expect when you start cutting it," said McGuire. "Every year professional log cutters get killed in the woods and they've been doing it all their life. It's a very dangerous job.

If you decide to take matters into your own hands, here are a few more reminders.

-Make sure your chainsaw and other equipment are properly maintained, and that you have the proper training.

-Eliminate any other hazards that may be in the way.

-Determine the tree's falling direction.

-Always wear protective gear like gloves, safety glasses, and a hard hat and hearing protection.
