Utica Common Council President, William Morehouse tells Eyewitness News that Mayor Rob Palmieri would like to put five police cars back in the city budget.

Mr. Morehouse has called for a special meeting on Friday, March 22 at 5 p.m. to discuss the vetoes by Mayor Palmieri.

Palmieri did confirm that he is looking at vetoing items in the budget and does not want to hinder public safety.

"I'm hoping he puts police cars back in the budget," said Morehouse. "We can only beat the police force so much until it becomes too much."

If the Mayor's vetoes are approved by the common council, Councilman Joe Marino says tax payers would be paying more.

Marino says the budget should stay the way it is.

"Any veto that could come down from the Mayor's office, if he does decide to veto any, really wouldn't make any sense...we've already voted one time, we're just going to keep our votes and keep the taxes at 1.99 right now," said Marino.

Ultimately, Mr. Morehouse says the Common Council has the power to override any veto by Mayor Palmieri.

They would need six votes for the override.
