Utica fire officials say there was an explosion in a manhole at the corner of Genesee and Elizabeth Streets just before noon.
Upon arrival, crews discovered a fire in the manhole, but say it didn't spread past the vault.
Despite backing up traffic, officials say the explosion didn't cause any injuries.
A representative with National Grid says they will probably be on scene through the night and tomorrow morning.
All power has been restored.
