Federal legislation that will reform how colleges treat sexual violence was signed into law today by President Obama. Last week the senate and the house passed the Violence Against Women Act.

Included in the act is the Campus Sexual Violence Elimination Act, which requires colleges to include reports of dating violence, sexual assault and stalking in their annual crime statistics. SUNYIT's Campus Police say this is a smart move.

"The importance of the act allows the universities country wide to increase its information, education to the greater community, not only students, but employees and visitors to campus and to reduce crime so anything along these lines is a helpful piece," says Gary Bean, SUNIT Chief of Police.

Schools will also have to provide awareness programs for new students and employees, and must offer those who are victims of abuse an immediate change in housing or work environment.
