As is the case in any business atmosphere competition drives the market. However, Utica healthcare took a different path. Sister Rose Vincent Gleason is recognized for both to remain viable change was needed.

"The way that the hospitals could remain not only profitable and open that they would need to work together. And she as well as the administrators at the other hospital spent countless hours trying to figure out how to go about doing that. But we have some great success stories, the Mohawk Valley Heart Institute is known by the state health department as a model of cooperation between two facilities in one community." Cardiologist Dr. Brian Gaffney was recruited by sister rose to build a cardiac care center at the hospital, a program that is one of the many success stories of her vision. "She was very, very helpful in keeping the cardiac program truly state of the art. When I started out there was one cardiologist, we now have 12, and they've been recruited throughout the nation. It is truly, the people that are on this team could have gone literally any place, they're excellent at what they do and I think the patients appreciate their care." Sister Rose Vincent represented St. Elizabeth Medical Center but some feel she represented more than just that. "Sister Rose Vincent represented a significant public figure who was....she came from the hospital but she was very involved and cared deeply for the area. But also cared for her Syracuse, where she came from and the Orange. She was a special person."
