A standoff with police in New York Mills ends without gun fire tonight. Police received a call around 3 in the afternoon today.

Officials say 54-year-old James Mogle became upset with an acquaintance and branched a handgun.

This all happened at the Carolyn Courts Apartments on Clinton Street.

Mogle, who is a resident at the complex, was barricading himself inside his apartment.  Officials were negotiating and speaking with him for almost five hours.

Captain Francis Coots of the State Police says Mogle was not willing to give himself up. Police say Mogle was the only one in the apartment and seemed to be intoxicated. Captain Coots says time was on their side this time.

"It's not that he made threats against police. It's just that when we tried to confront him we weren't sure where the hand gun was. We know he has a hand gun, but we don't know where it is right now. We are trying to make this as safe as possible right now and we evacuated the residents adjoining his apartment," explained Coots.

Mogel is now in police custody. Captain Coots says they could not find any criminal history involving Mogle. Some residents say they are shocked to hear something like this happen in their neighborhood.
