Christian Patterson sentenced to life without parole for shooting and killing Deputy Kurt Wyman

The man who shot and killed an Oneida County Sheriff Deputy was sentenced today.

Christian Patterson faces life in prison without parole for killing Deputy Kurt Wyman back in June of last year.

The courtroom was packed with family, friends and fellow officers of late Deputy Kurt Wyman.

It was an emotional day for everyone, including Judge Barry Donalty as loved ones remembered the fallen officer.

"You Christian Patterson remind us all of the evil we must fight against daily to keep peace for the peaceful," said Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol.

Christian Patterson will spend the rest of his life in prison for killing Deputy Kurt Wyman back in June of last year.

"You had the opportunity to make a good choice and put your gun down, but you didn't. You made a bad choice," said Lauren Wyman.

Deputy Wyman's wife and parents were able to tell Christian Patterson one last time of how their lives are changed forever because of his tragic decisions.

"My son is so young he won't have memories to hold onto; just pictures. And my daughter never met her daddy. I birthed her 18 hours after you killed him. You took away my partner, best friend, lover, helpmate and husband," explained Lauren Wyman.

Deputy Wyman's mother told Patterson that he will one day stand before the righteous judge, God.

She questioned whether Patterson will accept eternal life in heaven.

Mrs. Wyman said if he did, she knows Kurt would be one of the first people to welcome him there.

"Yes he killed my son and that is a sin. But I'm a sinner just like he is. And Jesus would have to die even if Christian did not kill Kurt. I am sinner just as much as he is. God sent his son to save us both," said Lynnette.

Patterson also said his last words to the Wyman family.

He says he wished the incident never happened, but he says there needs to be an investigation.

 "They need to investigate top to bottom, bottom to top starting with Maciol on down. They promise to protect and serve. That night it did not happen," said Patterson.

As Patterson was being taken away, officers did an about face.  They turned their backs against Patterson. According to Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol, they did that as a sign of disrespect.

To honor Deputy Kurt Wyman, the Oneida County Board of Legislators passed a resolution today to rename the Sheriff's Office as the Deputy Kurt B. Wyman Law Enforcement Building.
