Although the Mohawk Valley is known for its diversity and its various cultures, there are challenges for healthcare professionals when identifying cultural barriers.
Today, Faxton St. Luke's Healthcare hosted a culture fair to learn how to enhance health outcomes for individuals of different cultures.
A representative from the refugee center gave presentations during the fair to address cultural barriers in order to build stronger patient relationships.
"It's very important to be able to come where they are and to help them and work together. Working with a diverse community does present challenges, but we like to have the partnership to work on the challenges together and come up with solutions for the needs that they have," said Shana Pughe, the manager of Language Services of Compass Interpreters, a division of the refugee center.
The refugee center says the culture fair was put on today in honor of April being minority health month.
