Mayor Palmieri seeks to ban sale of synthetic drugs in Utica

Utica Mayor Robert Palmieri has directed the Corporation Council to draft a law that would ban the sale of synthetic drugs in the City of Utica.

Governor Andrew Cuomo recently ordered a ban on synthetic drugs that carry brand names such as "Spice" and "K-2".

With existing federal bans easily bypassed, and a stronger ban currently stalled in Congress, Mayor Palmieri is taking matters into his own hands.

"We have to take decisive local action," Palmieri said. "The best way to stop the sale of illicit substances is street-level intervention. No convenience store, gas station or head shop owner wants to see a police officer walk through the door searching their shelves and store rooms for dangerous drugs."

He goes on to say passing the ordinance is both a warning and a promise that no sale of the synthetic compound will go unpunished.

Comments

If you are really worried about dangerous compounds that threaten people's lives, concentrate on tobacco and alcohol sold that kill and injury more people each day than synthetic weed has since it started. However, the small businesses that sell this material do not make the large political contributions that determines justice in this country. Stamp out the harmless synthetics and people will just switch back to illegal weed.
