Area schools participate in Zero Waste Lunch Challenge

Students in Central New York are competing in a lunch challenge to reduce the amount of waste they produce during many students favorite time of day, lunch time.
The goal behind the Zero Waste Lunch Challenge is to bring awareness about the environment and recycling.
According to the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority, the second biggest amount of waste produced in schools happens during lunch.
Fifth graders at Hugh R. Jones Elementary helped their peers learn how to properly dispose of their lunches.
"Were trying to recycle as much as we can and throw away the least amount of garbage. It's helping the earth and not a lot of garbage is going to the landfill," said Isabella Pedula, a student at Hugh R. Jones.
There are eleven schools participating in the challenge.
The winner will be announced tomorrow morning.
