What's Halloween without decorating your house with pumpkins?  Well last year might have looked less festive as farmers didn't sell as many pumpkins due to the wet weather.

Eyewitness News Reporter Jennifer Lee checked in with one area business to see how the pumpkin harvest is going this year.

It's that time of year again where many of you are probably picking out the best pumpkins to carve with the family or even eat for the holidays. But, what some of you may not know is this time last year some farmers say they had a pumpkin shortage.

On Monday afternoon, youngsters and their parents were coming in and out of Candella's Market in Marcy.

"Just picking pumpkins and going to carve them," said one child.

"Picking pumpkins to celebrate Halloween and decorate them," said the other.

Today was a family event as they chose from a variety of sizes and colors at Candella's farm in Marcy.

This year, Candella's grew two to three acres of pumpkins, but they say it wasn't that easy.

"It's not just throwing out seeds at the back door and they grow. We do put a lot of effort into growing large pumpkins and small pumpkins," said Shawna Candella-Papale of Candella's Farm.

Shawna Candella-Papale says you need a combination of hot weather and rainy days to grow the perfect pumpkins.

Unfortunately, last year with Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee, Candella's says they lost a lot of them.

But, this season Shawna says they also faced a few bumps along the growing process.

"This year the challenge was the dry weather and hot weather. But, we were able to irrigate a good portion of our pumpkins," explained Candella-Papale.

Although Candella's may have enough pumpkins to go around this fall season, they say they still don't have enough to do one thing.

"We are able to grow what we need for sale, but we don't have excess pumpkins for donations this year," said Candella-Papale.

Despite the challenges, Candella's says they have not raised the prices of their pumpkins.
