People all across the country are remembering 26 people whose lives were taken in the Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting- 20 of them being children, all who were six or seven-years-old. And one of young victims having local ties in Central New York.

"It's very sad. It's a very sad thing that happened... a senseless crime," said Vernon resident, Mary Zabele.

Residents in the City of Sherrill are mourning the loss of one of the young victims whose grandparents live in the small, close-knit community.

Six-year-old James Mattioli was the grandson of Jack and Kathy Radley who currently live in Sherrill. His mother, Cindy grew up in the Silver City.

"Whatever we can do to help lessen their burden, the Radley's. I think that is being said across the nation. Whatever we can do to lessen the burden of those who were affected," said Robert Comis, the City Manager.

According to his obituary, James or "J" was an energetic, loving friend to all. He loved sports and swam like a fish in his grandparents' pool and would wear shorts and t-shirts in any weather.

"Embrace what you have. Enjoy what you have. If it's little of nothing, you have something," said Jane Kroneck of Munnsville.

The Central New Yorker does not know the Radley's personally, but she says it's still heart breaking for the community.

However, the City of Sherrill is not new to tragedy. Last year, the life of six-year-old Lauren Belius was taken after being stabbed to death in Sherrill by her mother's then boyfriend.

"We will certainly pull together and help in any way that we can. And that is what this community is about and has a history of doing," said Comis.

Mayor William Vineall has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in memory of the victims of Friday's shooting.
