Now that the holidays are over, many people are taking down their Christmas trees. The Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority wants to remind people that they do offer Christmas tree recycling. Starting today, the Authority's green waste compost facility will be accepting real Christmas trees, but the recycling coordinator says there are some rules.

"Make sure your Christmas tree does not have any decorations left on it or things like tinsel. Because what we do is we take all the Christmas trees we receive and we actually compost them at our 13 acre compost site. We take our finished compost and we actually sell that back to residents in the 2 counties," says Jamie Tuttle, recycling coordinator.

Christmas tree recycling is free. Tuttle also says most municipalities have a collection schedule but if your municipality does not, residents can deliver trees for composting to the Authority's Utica Convenience Station on Leland Ave during normal business hours, Monday-Friday 8:00 am to 4:00 pm and Saturday from 7:00 am until 2:00 pm.
