One organization invested more than $2 million dollars in 2012 to support various programs throughout Central New York.
The Community Foundation of Herkimer & Oneida Counties has chosen organizations involved in youth violence prevention, literacy programs and research in heart disease.
Every year, the grants are generated by area donors.
"When we look at projects to fund we focus on how this will impact our local residents. And we look at programs that we feel that will have the best returns and be the best investments in the community to help people lead better lives," said Jan Squadrito, the Senior Program Officer.
In its 61 years of existence, the Community Foundation says it has awarded more than $41 million in grants.
Education, healthcare and the arts are some of the main focus areas for the organization.
