A public hearing on the Utica Common Council's decision regarding Halleck's Ravine has been canceled tonight, but for good reason. The city wants to make repairs to the ravine to prevent flooding but it needs access from several home-owners whose property includes the ravine.

As of last month, all but 1 property owner had signed over access to the city, but this morning we received word that all of the property owners have agreed.

"This trickles down to every taxpayer in the city because when the city has to go up there and clean after a flood, city taxpayer has to pay for that. And i think this is a very positive result. It shows what cooperation can do in working out these types of problems," says Frank Vescera, Councilman D-1.

The city was considering granting itself access to the homeowner's property to clear the way for the repairs, but now that all owners have agreed, that action won't be necessary.

Vescera says the city will be placing concrete boxes with holes in them in the ravine. This is a method to prevent flooding, and he says the city will see these changes in the Spring.
