Utica College kicked off women's history month this afternoon. Students and staff attended the "In Celebration of Women" luncheon.

Today's keynote speaker, Dr. Mellisa Fierke is an assistant professor at SUNY Environmental Science and Forestry.

She talked about how she juggles her role as a mother, scientist and teacher.

"Maybe your background didn't prepare you to take the road you wanted to take and so i come from a very small town. I was never expected to go to college. So, to do that was out of the bounds of what was expected of me growing up," said Dr. Fierke.

Dr. Fierke says she never imagined she'd be working with the top scientists in her field. She also discussed challenges women currently face in the sciences.
