There's been some construction going on near Champlin Ave. and Whitesboro St. in Utica.

It's part of the first phase of the North-South Arterial Project, which is the demolition contract.

Crews are working to extend Champlin Ave. over to Oriskany Blvd.

Both streets are state highways that have a gap, and after construction they'll be connected.

"Any emergency vehicles coming down from the north will be able to get off on Oriskany Blvd. headed to Champlin Ave. go up, access the hospitals. It's going to give a lot of mobility to this intersection," said Jim Piccola, Public Information Officer for the Department of Transportation for Region 2.

Officials say they expect the portion of the project to be finished by the end of June.
