Kucko: Rozelle's vision is realized

By: John Kucko

Legendary NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle had a vision for the Super Bowl.  It was his idea to create a grand game, to make it larger than life.  There's no way he could have foreseen what the Super Bowl has become to, not only America, but the world.  Back in the late 1960's, Rozelle was worried about garnering interest in the game.  He would wine and dine newspaper reporters in hopes they would, at the very least, just cover those early games.  What it has become is the single biggest sporting event in the United States and in many parts of the world.  The advertising engine that surrounds the Super Bowl is massive.  ALL of this can be attributed to Rozelle, who was a PR-minded Commissioner who had the deft touch to help make the game what it is today.

Last one for Superdome?: I have to believe that if New Orleans gets to host another Super Bowl, they will likely have to have a new stadium here.  The Superdome looks great on the outside, nicely decorated with the Super Bowl art, etc.  The inside is another story.  By modern NFL standards, the place is sub-standard.  They have hopes of landing the 208 Super Bowl--yet I think they really need a new venue if they are going to get it.  The city is wonderful and has a ton to offer, it's deserving of this game and I applaud what they have done, post-Katrina, to get it back. Good for them.
