Hamilton outhit both of its opponents in Thursday’s Kristen Haver Memorial Tournament at Mudville.
Unfortunately for coach Bill Dowsland’s Emerald Knights, it didn’t lead to outscoring both foes.
Hamilton beat Section II’s Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons 20-1 in the semifinals thanks to Sam Martin’s solid pitching and a trio of homers. The Emerald Knights scored eight times in the first inning and never looked back, leaving only Martin’s pursuit of a no-hitter for suspense.
A leadoff double in the fifth inning ended the senior’s bid and an RBI single helped ND-BG avoid a shutout as well. But Martin - one of the home run hitters - shut the door after that. The righty fanned eight and allowed just one walk in the five-inning game. Martin also had two singles to go with her homer to key an 18-hit attack. Sara Whyatt and Jordan Peterson belted the other homers while Jenna Whyatt tripled twice for the other slugging highlights.
