A Field of Honor

  A sea of red, white and blue wave proudly at the Reilly-Mumford Park in the city of Sherrill to commemorate the tenth anniversary of September 11th.

Two hundred flags stand tall, each dedicated to a loved one from community members.

A local woman has started a new tradition that will now be a part of her community. Vicki Andrews, the proud resident of Sherrill says she got the community involved and her flag idea took off.

However, at first Andrews said she was a little hesitant.

"When I came up with this idea, I asked my neighbors and see what they thought of it. The next thing I know my neighbors wanted to buy five flags. I said to myself, well that's a good start."

The word spread quickly and soon enough Andrews kept getting orders.

"I'm just so proud of our community everybody just pulled together and did it," said Andrews.

Andrews explains that each different flag represents a firefighter, a police officer, a soldier in the war, as well as fallen soldiers.

"We do have a flag dedicated to a firefighter who was involved in 9-11... I have to hold back the tears sometimes when I'm typing because they are so emotional."

Each flag will have tags attached to them. The tags contain personal messages written to a hero.

The City of Sherrill will hold a memorial on September 11th at the Reilly-Mumford Park. The ceremony will begin at noon.
