For travelers tired of going to Syracuse or Albany to take a flight, a change may be in store. Oneida County officials have reached out to Spirit Airlines with hopes to bring commercial flights to Griffiss Business and Technology Park. County Executive Anthony Picente says they're not looking to make Griffiss a fully-running airport, but rather one that operates seasonally or a few times a month. He says Griffiss is a full service airport in terms of 'general' aviation, so commercial aviation is a real possibility. And he points out that it can help people and the county out during the rough economic times.
Overhead costs would be significantly less at Griffiss than at a larger airport. And commercial flights would bring revenue into the county. Picente says he reached out to Spirit Airlines in August and is planning on checking in with them again soon.
