Sen. Schumer Presses Homeland Security on Terror Group

Senator Charles Schumer is pressing Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to crack down on a Mexican Terror Group.

According to a Times Union report, the Terror group sent bombs to nanotechnology research facilities in South America and Europe.

Senator Schumer says New York could be a potential target. He says he fears that the Mexican Terror Group can be a threat to New York's growing nanotechnology industry.

In Wednesday's Senate Judiciary Committee Hearing, Mr. Schumer says there is a growing concern that universities with nanotechnology research programs could be a target. He says the terror group opposes nanotechnology for religious or cultural reasons.

"New York State is one of the leading nanotechnology hubs. There are facilities in Albany and in Rochester. At the moment it is my impression that the Department of Homeland Security is not participating in efforts to keep schools and other facilities safe from other attacks," said Schumer.

Senator Schumer says SUNY IT can also be a potential target. SUNY IT is expected to grow over the next several years as nanoscale research expands in Upstate New York.

Homeland Security Secretary Napolitano says she promises to look into issues and take measures to ensure that various institutions are safe.
