The Food Bank of Central New York provides food for soup kitchens, food pantries and emergency shelters all throughout Central New York.

The Food Bank says they delivered over 11-million pounds of food last year.

When someone thinks of hunger, some may assume the homeless and the poor. But Lynn Hy, the Director of Philanthropy of the Food Bank of Central New York says the face of hunger is changing.

"It's the people around the corner. Members of your church or community center that have lost their job and they need to stretch their budget to cover expenses and stretch budget and save dollars on food," explained Hy.

With the holiday season, Lynn says it is a time for giving. But, what happens after the end of the year?

"Everybody thinks about feeding the hungry when it's cold out and when its thanksgiving and Christmas. But, after the first year it's still cold and that need is still there. Everyday 365 days a year," said Hy.

The Food Bank says providing healthy food is also important.

"We're trying to make it a nutritionally balanced meal. Although they have to rely on the emergency food they can eat a nutritious meal that can sustain them throughout the day," said Hy.

Bill Bundt, a store manager at Price Chopper says your dollars can go a long way.

"You can make a difference and can make a nice donation for the people who live locally in our community ... where your dollars stay right here in the area," said Bundt.

To participate in "Check Out Hunger" Price Chopper customers can donate $1, $3 or $5. All proceeds will go to the food bank of Central New York.
