One area organization is honoring the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War.

The Oneida County Historical Society is funding the Civil War Memorial Project to commemorate the sesquicentennial year.

An 1861 Civil War era cannon will be displayed in the pavilion right outside the Historical Society's building on Genesee Street.

The Executive Director says it is important to remember the sacrifices area soldiers made in the war.

"The Civil War was the biggest conflict ever in the North American continent. Oneida County citizens played a significant role in that. It's apart of our regions identity and it's important to commemorate that in the sesquicentennial years," said Brian Howard.

The cannon is currently being restored in Deansboro while MVCC students are lending a hand with building the pavilion.

The director says he hopes the memorial is finished before July.
