Grab your sneakers and water bottles because racing season is in full swing. Relay For Life has reached Central New York.

Some say that behind every great man is a great woman. And this is certainly the case with the Floyd Fire Department's Ladies Auxiliary. The ladies have been fundraising and hosting events since October in preparation for Whitesboro's relay. And after the event wrapped and the numbers were tallied, they learned their hard work has definitely paid off.

"It's just kind of an overwhelming feeling and it's just so nice to see everyone come together," says Donna Grems, Floyd Ladies Auxiliary.

For Floyd and Stitsville's fire departments, it's about giving and it's about coming together. The Ladies Auxiliaries from both towns team up to prepare for Whitesboro's Relay For Life.

"Our booth is with the Floyd and Stitville Volunteer Fire Department. We combine together every year for the relay and we start in the fall. We have raffles for pasta baskets, lottery tickets," says Karen Sutherland, Stitville Ladies Auxiliary.

"Everything that's here has been donated, we don't pay for anything. And I appreciate everybody's help in what we've earned. One person doesn't do it at all, we have a wonderful group," says Kathy Taylor, Floyd Ladies Auxiliary.

Some do it to remember and some do it honor. Why does the Ladies Auxiliary relay? They say the event hits close to home for many of their members.

"My husband passed away with pancreas cancer and many close friends and relatives and everyone is touched by cancer in some way. So that's what gives us all the energy to do what we do," says Taylor.

"I had a brother that passed away 6 years ago and it's very dear to my heart," says Betsy Schwertfeger, Floyd Ladies Auxiliary.

"I lost both of my parents to cancer so it means a lot to me. And my husband is recovering from skin cancer, he's a survivor," says Sutherland.

The ladies are showing cancer whose boss. Together, they raised nearly 13- thousand dollars. That's 5 grand more than last year, the largest amount ever raised at the Whitesboro Relay For Life.

"We did really well but it wouldn't be that without the community supporting us," says Schwertfeger.

The whitesboro relay for life raised a total of 80 thousand dollars. We'll be following all of the relays this weekend and don't forget to watch our special live broadcast saturday night at 8.
