Students at Benton Hall Academy in Little Falls commemorated National Flag day today and also learned the importance of the American flag.
A flag flown over the U.S. Capitol was presented to the school. Students sang patriotic songs for teachers, the Little Falls Mayor and area veterans.
One veteran who served in World War II was one of the marines who witnessed the American flag being raised when the U.S. captured the island of Iwo Jima in japan back in 1945.
"When I saw that flag go up I was almost ready to drop. It felt like the war was off my shoulders. I figured a good part of this war is over now that the enemy cannot tell where to fire upon us," said Leo Gregorka, a World War II veteran.
The 91-year-old says he carries around the historical picture of the American flag raising to this day.
