Freedom at Fort Stanwix

    It's become known as the fort that never surrendered, built in 1758 by the British, it was a key part in the American Revolution. Park Ranger William Sawyer says, "It was here at Fort Stanwix that we had the best chance of blocking that British Army from advancing any further. And with the successful defense of the fort, forcing the British to retreat, that then allowed the Americans to win the larger battles of Saratoga in the Fall of 1777 bringing about the turning point in the American Revolution by bringing France on to our sides as allies."

            Fort Stanwix was a vital aspect to American independence and today people took time out of their day to learn a little bit of history about this fort. Meredith Mitchell of Rome says, "Just seeing everything as it was, it makes you realize that they went through an awful lot to keep us all here. I'm just almost speechless because it's touched my heart."

            They were farmers and lawyers, shoemakers and carpenters, but in the end they fought as one. Today a Fort Drum soldier along with his family remembered the sacrifice that was made at Fort Stanwix. Sean Keller says, "You know Fourth of July, what better time to come out and see the history of America and what made the country what it is today. You know it happened 200 years ago, over 200 years ago just something you don't think about every day, it's pretty cool."
