The Herkimer Police Department is investigating an increase in counterfeit money complaints over the past week.
Officials say stores have been reporting fake ten and twenty dollar bills. Police are urging area stores to carefully check the bills they get. One resident says he's surprised to hear that counterfeit money is circulating in the area. He says you only hear about these types of incidents in bigger cities.
"People that are hurting are the people who have to shop every day and go to the stores. If we have this money circulating it's going to cost more for everything. You get these stores with all kinds of cash registers it's going to circulate to other people," said Earl Kellogg, a Herkimer County resident.
Police say they are finding the counterfeit money in places like dollar tree, Walmart, Applebee's and McDonald's.
