Area residents dedicated some of their time today at the Parkway's Recreation Center for its volunteer service project.

Members of the Mohawk Valley Regional Volunteer Center gathered earlier this morning to sort donated canned goods and boxes for area veterans.

One volunteer, Francis Roy, tells Eyewitness News this is a small way he can give back to servicemen and women here at home.

"Our freedom is being defended every single day by men and women all over the world. We should never forget what happened on that date and the sacrifices made by the men and women in the armed services," said Roy.

Mr. Roy says this is also a way for the community to make something positive out of such a tragic event.
