Electronic Dance Music Hits CNY; Avicii Comes to Turning Stone Event Center

He's one of the top DJ's in the world and he's coming to our area. Since
Avicii burst onto the international scene, the DJ has taken off and so
has electronic dance music. Because of his widespread appeal, Turning
Stone is bringing Avicii to Verona this Sunday night. Eyewitness News
reporter Rachel Polansky visited with concert coordinators, area DJ's,
and excited fans who say they're happy electronic dance music is making
it's way to Central New York.
"He's the biggest electronic artist in the world right now so that's pretty cool that they're bringing him to us, of all places," says David Chirco, Utica College student.
It may not look like it now but come Sunday, this venue will be flooded with people. Coordinators tell me this isn't just a big event for Turning Stone. It's a big event for an entire genre of music.
"EDM has become such a popular, mainstream movement in the last year or so and it's very exciting for Turning Stone to offer this genre of music here," says Jerry Marello, Operations Manager, Turning Stone Lava.
EDM; it stands for electronic dance music. And some say it's taking over the music industry. DJ Davey D is opening for Avicii and he says the EDM scene is more than just music.
"It's culture. And that's what it is. Being out here in the sticks, its tough to access, so to have him come and have people actually experience the full, true electro scene with a top notch performer, I think it's great," says DJ Davey D, Avicii's opening performer.
"By hearing the music and feeling the energy, it's something they're gonna be into," says Marello.
And Marello says these are the events that help Turning Stone reach a younger clientele.
"The local colleges being involved, we see it becoming bigger and bigger," says Marello.
"Everyone seems to like this music right now, guys, girls, my parents like this music," says Chirco.
"It generates a buzz, it generates business, it generates everything for up here and that's what we need in this area," says Joe Hickel, Utica resident.
And coordinators say they hope this will be the first of many electronic shows to come to our area.
"We are leading the area with EDM," says DJ Davey D.
"This show, it's not just about the music, it's lighting, it's effects, and it's gonna be epic," says Marello.
The Avicii concert is this Sunday night at the Turning Stone Event Center. Doors open at 7pm and Avicii takes the stage at 8:30pm. Coordinators say tickets are still available.
