A new weight loss drug has just hit the market. Qsymia was recently approved by the food and drug administration in July. Patients that tested the drug found a weight loss of eight to ten percent after using the drug for a year. Qsymia is the first weight loss drug approved by the FDA since 1999. Doctors say the drug will not cure obesity by itself but combined with lifestyle changes should make a difference.
Kevin Hoehn, Parmacy Clinical Coordinator at Faxton St. Luke's Healthcare says, "That's why the FDA is trying to control this. I think they don't want this preserved as a medication that you can just take a pill for a problem. And what they want is you use this pill in tight monitored controls by the health where your weight is checked at three month intervals to make sure you're within range of the weight loss and then combine it with lifestyle modifications which include diet and exercise"
Experts say if you're thinking about Qsymia consult your healthcare provider to see if you qualify.
