The Herkimer County school merger vote is just one week away. Residents will decide if the Herkimer, Ilion, and Mohawk school districts should combine into a single, larger district. The proposal has stirred up a lot of debate.. and still is. Yard signs -- both in favor and in opposition of the plan -- are popping up throughout Herkimer County... And people appear to be split on the merger.
Mike Adukiewicz of Herkimer says, "I think it's not really a good idea because of sports and it will kind of be confusing for the teams and it might be, I'm not saying it will be, but it might be more expensive but in the long-run it might be more expensive."
Melissa DeVaul grew up in Mohawk but now has children that attend Herkimer School District. She is for the merger and says, "I just think it's going to give them a lot more opportunities, I think it will be great for them, everything I've heard about it so far it just seems like a good idea to me."
The merger vote is a week from today. Polls are open from noon to 8 P.M. Residents must vote in their own school district.
