When it came to Sandy passing through Central New York last night, many residents are saying they got off lucky.

Although there was no reported injuries in the Village of Herkimer, Sandy did still leave some inconvenient damage in the village.

"It was very scary during the night, the noise was absolutely scary," said Herkimer resident, Mary-Lou Krech.

Krech lives up from North Main Street in Herkimer and woke up to fallen trees from her neighbor's home.

Tim Marusic who lives next to Mary-Lou, found himself unable to drive up to his own house.

"My car's parked up on the other end of the road here, the trees are knocked down it's quite a mess," he said.

Herkimer Police say they got a call right before 11 p.m. on Monday night about a large tree that had fallen down on some power lines.

"There were three big pine trees that fell and damaged the residence and also took down a bunch of wires and even a pole," said Robert Vandawalker, Director of Herkimer County Emergency Services.

But despite the damage, neighbors say they're just glad no one was hurt.

"It could have been much worse," said Marusic.

"We were lucky, very lucky," said Krech.

And lucky is right. Preparing for what could have been one of the worst storms that Central New York has seen, Vandawalker says they got off lightly.

"We've actually had thunderstorms in the summertime where we've seen more damage then what we had last night," he said.
