November 1st marks the start of American Diabetes Month. One expert stressed healthy eating at Price Chopper in New Hartford today by holding a Diabetes Grocery Shopping Tour.
Shoppers learned about making better food choices and how to read nutrition labels. And with the holidays right around the corner, the dietician says don't let that throw you off.
"Keep in mind my plate, half of your plate should be non-starchy vegetables and watching your portion sizes. It's no different than any other day. You just want to watch your portion sizes. It's okay to enjoy a piece of pie, but be aware of the portion size," said Crystal Wilkins, a registered dietician.
The dietician says it's important for diabetics to watch their blood sugar levels.
In order to do so, she says it's good to keep portion sizes of carbs in check as well as being consistent with eating three meals a day.
