Some area agencies are calling on elected officials to repeal the federal spending cuts known as sequestration.

Many organizations in Central New York are discussing how the automatic spending cuts would affect the people they serve.

More than fifteen community-based groups say the cuts will greatly hurt the most vulnerable residents, including the poor and disabled.

John Furman, the president of the CNY Citizens in Action, says the sequester cuts will impact cities such as Utica that rely on federal housing and education assistance.

"It's contrary to the whole values of the American society to write off, to discard millions of people who are poor, aging and disabled. We are also sacrificing our children's future. These cuts will make it more difficult for young people to lead successful lives," said Furman.

Mr. Furman says instead of cuts, congress should consider closing tax loopholes for the rich.
