Some people spent last night at an American Red Cross Shelter. Herkimer County Community College was opened for residents who had to be evacuated from their homes in the area of Main Street in Herkimer because of the standoff with the suspect from Wednesday's deadly shootings. About 20 residents visited the shelter, and the staff says this is what they train for.

"When we got called upon, we knew we had to have shelter for these individuals. They've been displaced because of the suspect and they had no where else to go so its really important that we have these shelters set up for them," says Jennifer Balog, American Red Cross of the Mohawk Valley.

We've just received word that the shelter has closed. HCCC say the physical education building is now open for normal use.
