Oneida County Historical Society Unveils Senator Roscoe Conkling Portrait

Area historians were in for a treat tonight at the Oneida County
Historical Society. City historians unveiled a fully restored oil
painting of Utica Senator Roscoe Conkling. Conkling served as an Oneida
County District Attorney and Mayor of Utica in the 1800s. He was then
elected to congress and then senate, arguably becoming one of the most
powerful republicans in our nation.
"The portrait that we're dedicating hung in Utica City Hall during the late 19th and early 20th century. It's important that we preserve and promote the story of his life and this painting is the perfect vehicle to do that," says Brian Howard, Oneida County Historical Society executive director.
And if you want to see the painting, Mr. Conkling's portrait will be on long-term display in the society's main gallery on Genesee Street in Utica.
