All the championships were impressive and each had a particularly interesting story behind it. Tyler Sirota rebounded from an injury to win his Section III title and set off a jubilant celebration by Canastota fans. Dylan Kavanaugh’s third straight crown for Vernon-Verona-Sherrill showed that a gamble can pay off. But Shane Strong’s feat at 285 pounds? Well, that may have been the topper.
The Morrisville-Eaton senior had tough acts to follow. In recent years, the LeBlanc brothers - first Treavor and Paul then Ryan - broke through for titles and Alex Meyers also earned a trip to the state tourney. Strong’s predecessors had far more experience heading into their title quests, though. You see, M-E’s top heavyweight didn’t even start the sport until he was a sophomore. That made him quite a longshot to prevail in the Division II tournament at Utica’s War Memorial Auditorium.
“Amazing,” M-E coach Duane LeBlanc said of Strong’s effort. “In three years to be a sectional champ, it’s determination.”
