N.Y.Mills' basketball family affair for Dziekans

By: Michael Spellman
Updated: June 21, 2010

Two New York Mills basketball teams. Three Dziekans.

Those are the numbers for the Class D Marauders when the school’s boys and girls teams play Section III finals this weekend.

The top-seeded New York Mills girls (18-2) meet Center State Conference foe No. 7 Hamilton (13-7) at 5:30 p.m. Saturday for a third time this season. The state-ranked No. 1 Marauders boys (21-0) play Syracuse Academy of Science at noon Sunday.

In both games, there will be Dziekans on the court and in the stands.

Andrea Dziekan is in her eighth season as coach of the Marauders girls’ team. This year, she’s joined by daughter Carly, a 14-year-old freshman guard. Son Matthew, 18, is a senior guard on the boys’ team.

Matthew helped the Marauders complete his family’s place in the finals with 11 points and four steals in a semifinal win over Sackets Harbor on Monday. Earlier in the evening, the girls’ team defeated Sackets at Cicero-North Syracuse.
