Their record is perfect. Their effort on the floor of the Utica Aud today was as close to perfect as it could get and The New York Mills Maruaders (22-0) dismantled the Syracuse Academy of Science Atoms (19-3) 75-52.With the win New York Mills claims the Section III Class "D" Basketball title for the second year in a row.

The talk all week in local basketball circles was that the speed and quality of the guards of SAS was going to present the biggest challenge of the season to the Marauders. Make no mistake about it, the Atoms guards were good, so were their forwards. New York Mills was just better today, in every facet of the game.

The 1 - 2 front line punch of Fred Russ and Matt Welch went to work early in this one, combining for 14 of the Maruaders 24 first quarter points to propel "The Mills" to a 24-13 lead after the first 8 minutes of play.

You could sense it would be a Mills kind of day early on when big Fred Russ sank 6 straight free throws to show the Atom smashers just how focused his was on this championship Sunday.

The huge contingent of Mills fans that ringed the entire court was right behind their (as always) and the boys in in the white, orange and blue did not disappoint.

The second quarter was more of the same for the Marauders, as Jeremy Miller paced New York Mills with 6 points in the second frame. Miller, who scored 20 points on the day, was named the Section III Tournament Most Valuable Player.
