The Westmoreland softball squad opened its season on a high note as the Lady Bulldogs posted a 3-1 victory over New York Mills in a non-league game on Saturday.

Allie Schremmer belted a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to snap a 1-1 tie, while sophomore Cristina Rondenelli, making her first varsity start for the hosts, recorded the pitching win.

Jenn Munn’s single broke up a perfect game bid by New York Mills pitcher Corrin Flihan in the bottom of the fifth and later scored on a wild pitch to give the Lady Bulldogs the 1-0 lead.

Mills tied the game up in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI single by Hailey Griffith, scoring Brittany Englert.
