9/11 Sports Therapy

The tragic events of 9/11 left people with deep varying emotions. The leaders of this country urged everyone to try to get back to normalcy. One way Americans know how to do that is through sporting events.
Nothing can mend the wounds felt by everyone impacted by September 11th 2001. When the towers came crashing down, Americans didn't flinch, rallying together like athletes with the game is on the line. So it's only fitting that America, in a time of need, turn to sports for a sense of normalcy. "Yeah it kind of brought the nation back together. Where you can relax for a little while and enjoy a sporting event instead of actually thinking about what was going on, it was kind of a release from what was going on," said Chris Zebrowski of Utica.
Ten years later are people still turning to sports for that same bit of normalcy? "I think definitely people are watching more sporting events right now, you know to remember what it was ten years ago, remember what you felt ten years ago."
It took only a matter of days for the sporting world to get back to normal after 9/11 and it couldn't have come quicker for sports fans. "Sports helps people out throughout their whole lives, it gets your mind off of everything. Everybody works Monday through Friday or Saturday, Sunday is the one day they can actually relax and enjoy the day off watching sports."
No matter how you slice it, the sporting world is engrained in us as Americans. Call it what you will but it may be just the distraction we needed then and some say now more than ever.
