Utica Post Office in Danger of Consolidation with Syracuse Office

The United States Postal Office is facing serious financial trouble.  Last week the Postal Service released a statement proposing massive changes to the system.  One of the facilities in Utica might be hit hard by that restructuring.  They're examining 252 processing facilities nationwide for possible consolidation and looking to close what it calls low-activity stations.  And on top of that, their proposal includes cutting mail service down to five days a week.  Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe says the US postal service has to face a new reality.  Mail volume has decreased more than 43 billion pieces in the past 5 years and it continues to decline.  He says the postal service needs to work with Congress to pass new legislation by the end of the year to deal with this issue. 

This legislation could move some of the operations from the Utica facility on Pitcher Street to Syracuse.  Along with many Uticans, Representative Richard Hanna is also strongly opposed to this.  He released this statement:  "The Utica plant has a history of high productivity and performance and moving this facility could mean late, unreliable and possibly more costly mail delivery; it's unacceptable."
