During the holidays it's common to help out those in need with food or clothing, but how about donating blood?

The MVCC Alumni Association sponsored the 5th Annual Blood Drive teaming up with The American Red Cross.

The alumni coordinator says there's a shortage of blood during the holidays, but even more so now because of Hurricane Sandy.

"We like to do outreach to the community as an alumni association as well as teaching our students about giving and donating blood. Sometimes this is the first time they donate and they continue as a lifelong practice after that," said MVCC Alumni Coordinator, Marie Kohl.

The Alumni Association was hoping to get at least 100 units of blood from the drive.

If you're interested in donating the gift of life, contact The American Red Cross.

hometown heroes

Our nation’s best make significant sacrifices while serving in our military to help preserve our freedom and way of life.

From Afghanistan to Iraq, Desert Storm to Kuwait, Vietnam, Korea or World War II, our sons and daughters have sacrificed to serve our country all over the world.

Nominate someone who you think should be a "Hometown Hero."

On Monday nights, WUTR Eyewitness News at 6 and CNYhomepage.com will honor chosen submissions of hometown mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers during our on-going Hometown Heroes campaign.

We will honor Hometown Heroes stemming from the nominations that we receive from our community. Each Hero will be featured on air and right here on CNYhomepage.com.
