New Year's Eve marks a 42 year tradition for the Thruway authority.

Travelers along the New York State Thruway will be able to get free coffee and hot tea starting at 11 tonight.

Drivers who stop at any of the 27 Thruway Travel Plazas will be able to get in on the complementary drinks.

One traveler says it's crucial, especially on a busy night like New Year's Eve.

"People really need to be alert on New Year's Eve at all times. Plus we are up here and there is a lot of snow. It's the time of the year from like 11 to 2 in the morning where you really have to be on your toes," said traveler, Stewart Meck.

The yearly tradition is a way to prevent drowsy driving on the thruway and other roadways.

Drivers can stop for a caffeinated drink through 7 in the morning.
