Bringing the Roar Back to Boilermaker

By: Stephen Bond
Updated: January 10, 2013

It's hard to pinpoint exactly what makes the second Sunday in July so special. Maybe it's the scenic route. Maybe it's the post-race party. Most probably argue it's a combination of both. But something's been missing the past few years, the flyover at the post race party. But Senator Charles Schumer is trying to get that back.

Senator Schumer says, "They could plan a training mission on the day of the Boilermaker and fly right over us. Wouldn't cost the tax payers more and wouldn't be anything in their way. We have 4 wings of F-16's that are within 500 miles...one in Vermont, one in Pennsylvania, one in New Jersey and one in Massachusetts."

It's been three years since F-16's carved the skies above the F.X. Matt brewery. And everyone from perennials to rookies can appreciate the beauty of those metallic birds.

Executive Director of the Boilermaker Tim Reed says, "Everyone's heads are turning almost like in unison looking up waiting for those jets and first you see them then you hear them, it's electric."

Senator Schumer says, "I'm going to push very hard, I'll talk to the secretary of the Air Force and tell him this is really important, not just to me but to one of the greatest running events in all of the Eastern United States."

The most popular 9.3 mile race in New York has seen other flyovers but Executive Director Tim Reed says runners and spectators get a different feeling when F-16's come flying overhead.

Reed added, "You just see people literally crying when those jets come over in regards to it. And the roar it really does make it complete."
