Within hours of it being presented to our state's elected officials, a strict new set of gun laws has been passed by officials and signed by Governor Andrew Cuomo.

The legislation passed in the Senate Monday night and the NYS Assembly Tuesday.

It's called the NY Safe Act (Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement) and it gives New York State the toughest gun laws in the nation.

Here's some of what the new law entails:

A stricter assault weapons ban is one of the things included.

Another part address mental health, meaning no firearms should be given to someone with mental illness or someone who is a danger to themselves or others.

There will also be stronger regulations on ammunition.

Now, a gun's clip or magazine is limited to a capacity of seven rounds.

The purchase of ammunition will require a NY NICS background check to verify the person can legally posses a gun.

There's also a law that addresses safe storage of guns, meaning someone who lives with a person who has mental health issues, or is a convicted felon must keep all weapons safely stored.

And there's Mark's law, the Webster Provision in the law that provides a mandatory life sentence for someone who kills a first responder engaged in his or her duties.
